Dr. Derby was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her Bachelor of Science in neuroscience at Brown University. After spending a year working in Hawaii studying cancer epidemiology, she returned to Atlanta for medical school. She received her medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine, and also obtained a degree in Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health. She then completed her pediatric residency at the University of Washington, with a focus on community and global health.

Board-certified in pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Derby has practiced pediatrics in Washington and Michigan since 2016. She is thrilled to now put down roots in Asheville. She joined Mountain Area Pediatrics in January 2022. Dr. Derby and her husband, Evan, have two sons. She enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, stand up paddling and surfing, and vegetarian cooking.
